Hope Mill Theatre Arts (HMTA) is the first higher education training programme directly associated with a producing venue, allowing students to gain first hand knowledge, insight and experience into the Musical Theatre industry. HMTA’s BA (Hons) in Musical Theatre Performance offers an opportunity for many grass roots young people from across Greater Manchester and the North of England to train closer to home, making Musical Theatre training more accessible.
HMTA offers a boutique style training. through its association with Hope Mill Theatre.
The Industry is constantly changing and adapting, and training needs to be at the forefront with what students are learning, making sure we are training industry ready students, with a clear understanding of the path ahead.

Course Overview
Our course is designed to prepare you for an ever-changing industry. Our high standards and rigorous training is based on our years of experience creating and performing in Musical Theatre. Hope Mill Theatre has had the pleasure of launching many young stars careers and you could be the next!
Our students will be taught how to be independent, proactive company members with the skills to sustain a long career in the arts.
Along with practical performance skills, our course is designed to encourage business skills and career development.
Mental health is at the forefront of HMTA and ongoing student support is available. Students will also be offered career support after graduation through our in house agency.
Hope Mill Theatre prides itself on our inclusive, diverse approach which will be reflected at HMTA. Our students will be encouraged to be supportive, collaborative practitioners and professionalism will be at the core of everything we do.
We welcome input from our student body and aim to foster an environment of peer to peer support and reflective practice.
Entry Requirements
Entry is through a successful audition and interview.
Additionally, candidates should usually have gained five GCSE passes (grade C/4 or above), which must include English Language, and two A Level passes or a L3 BTEC National diploma or professional/vocational training at an appropriate level.
Exceptions are made for 17 year-olds who are offered a place on the degree course, who would therefore not have completed A Levels or a full diploma etc. Equivalent qualifications may also be accepted depending on the strength of the grades achieved. Equivalent level overseas qualifications are also accepted.
In some cases, applicants who don’t have the standard entry requirements will be required to complete the School Matriculation Task as part of their entry requirements.

What Will I Study?
Level 4
Song and Dance Performance (30 Credits) Compulsory Module
This module introduces students to the fundamental skills required for integrating singing and dance in musical theatre performance. Students will explore how vocal and physical techniques support one another in dynamic stage performance.
Acting and Voice Techniques 1 (30 Credits) Compulsory Module
Through this module students will develop foundational acting techniques, voice work, and movement skills while exploring characterisation, textual interpretation, and ensemble skills. Working collaboratively with directors, movement directors and creative teams, students will gain first-hand experience of the professional rehearsal process, from initial script analysis to final performance. Emphasis will be placed on integrating acting techniques with voice and physical storytelling to create a compelling and authentic performance.
Dance Techniques 1 (30 Credits) Compulsory Module
This module provides a technical foundation in the key dance styles essential for musical theatre performance. Students will develop their physical conditioning, coordination, musicality, and stylistic awareness through structured practical classes, focusing on technique, alignment, stamina, and performance quality.
Singing Techniques 1 (30 Credits) Compulsory Module
This module introduces students to the fundamental vocal techniques required for musical theatre in both individual and ensemble performance. Through practical voice training, structured exercises, and performance-based assessments, students will develop essential skills in breath control, tone production, pitch accuracy, resonance, and articulation.
Students will explore the mechanics of healthy vocal production and learn to apply technical principles to a range of musical theatre repertoire. Emphasis will be placed on vocal stamina, musicality, and expressive storytelling, ensuring that students can deliver performances that are both technically secure and emotionally engaging.
Level 5
Musical Theatre Performance 1 (15 Credits) Compulsory Module
Building upon the foundational skills developed at Level 4, this module advances students’ abilities in integrating singing, acting, and dance within musical theatre performance. Through rehearsal and a performance project, students will refine their technical skills, deepen their interpretative choices, and enhance their stage presence in both solo and ensemble contexts.
Students will engage with more complex choreography, harmonised vocal arrangements, and character-driven storytelling, requiring them to apply a heightened level of technical precision, emotional depth, and stylistic awareness. The module will explore scene-to-song transitions, ensemble dynamics, and stamina-building strategies, equipping students with the skills necessary for the professional demands of musical theatre.
Dance Techniques 2 (30 Credits) Compulsory Module
Building on the foundational dance training established at Level 4, this module further develops students’ technical and expressive abilities in dance styles essential to musical theatre performance. Students will refine their skills in a variety of dance techniques, with an increased focus on stylistic execution, physical conditioning, musicality, and performance quality.
Through a combination of technical classes, and performance-based assessments, students will enhance their movement vocabulary, agility, and strength while deepening their understanding of how dance technique contributes to storytelling in musical theatre. There will be an emphasis on improving stamina, dynamic range, and precision, enabling students to respond effectively to the choreographic demands of a industry led performance environment.
Singing Techniques 2 (30 Credits) Compulsory Module
Building on the foundational skills developed in Singing Techniques 1, this module advances students’ vocal training, focusing on the refinement of technical ability, vocal health, stylistic versatility, and expressive performance in musical theatre singing. Students will further develop their understanding of vocal placement, resonance, and control while expanding their repertoire across a range of musical theatre styles, from classical legit to contemporary and belt techniques.
Through technical classes, one-to-one coaching, and ensemble work, students will explore advanced breath management, vocal agility, and dynamic interpretation to enhance storytelling and characterisation in song. Emphasis will be placed on integrating vocal and physical expression, ensuring a cohesive and engaging stage presence. Students will also develop their ability to apply vocal techniques consistently in rehearsal and performance settings, preparing them for the rigorous demands of professional musical theatre.
Acting and Voice techniques 2 (30 Credits) Compulsory Module
Building on the foundational skills developed at Level 4, this module deepens students’ understanding and application of acting and voice techniques in musical theatre performance. Through practical workshops, rehearsals, and performance-based assessments, students will refine their ability to connect emotion, text, and vocal expression to create compelling and authentic performances.
Students will engage with a range of acting methodologies, exploring character development, text analysis, improvisation, and emotional truth to enhance their interpretative skills. Vocal technique training will focus on speech clarity, projection, articulation, and vocal expression, ensuring a seamless transition between spoken and sung performance. Emphasis will also be placed on integrating acting and vocal skills within musical theatre scenes, supporting students in developing nuanced, dynamic, and technically sound performances.
Swing and Understudy Project (15 credits) Compulsory Module
This module introduces students to the essential skills required for swing and understudy roles in musical theatre, focusing on adaptability, preparation, and performance under pressure. Swings and understudies play a vital role in theatrical productions, requiring a deep understanding of multiple tracks, quick recall of choreography and blocking, and the ability to maintain performance consistency across various roles.
Students will explore script and score analysis, movement tracking, character development, and vocal preparation to equip them with the tools to cover multiple roles confidently. Through practical workshops, rehearsals, and performance assessments, they will develop strategies for learning and retaining multiple roles efficiently, adapting to different performance demands, and stepping into a role at short notice.
Level 6
Musical Theatre Performance 2 (30 Credits) Compulsory Module
Building on the foundations established at Level 5, this module challenges students to refine and apply their technical, artistic, and professional skills in a fully integrated musical theatre performance setting. Through a combination of rehearsals, workshops, and performance opportunities, students will engage with complex choreography, apply advanced vocal techniques, and in-depth character development to deliver compelling, high-quality performances.
Students will work towards a fully staged performance, applying their training in acting, singing, and dance within a professional rehearsal process. The module emphasises stylistic versatility, stamina, and performance consistency, requiring students to demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of ensemble dynamics, solo work, and storytelling through song and movement.
Careers and Professional Practice (30 Credits) Compulsory Module
This module is designed to prepare students for the transition from training into the professional musical theatre industry. Through a combination of mock auditions, industry-led workshops, and reflective practice, students will refine their professional presentation, audition techniques, and career management strategies.
Students will engage with audition simulations in acting, singing, and dance, replicating industry expectations and providing opportunities to receive professional-level feedback.
They will develop an understanding of casting processes, self-marketing, and industry networking, alongside strategies for sustaining a long-term career in a competitive field.
Industry Showcase (30 Credits) Compulsory Module
This capstone module serves as the culmination of students’ training, bridging the gap between education and professional industry practice. Designed as an equivalent to a dissertation, this practice-based module assesses students holistically across acting, dance, and singing, evaluating their ability to apply their craft at a professional level.
Devising a new Musical Project (30 Credits) Compulsory Module
Building on the foundational skills developed at Level 4 and 5, this module explores the creative and collaborative processes involved in devising original musical theatre work. Students will engage in practical workshops, collaborative rehearsals, and creative research to develop an original concept, incorporating music, lyrics, dialogue, and movement to shape a new piece of musical theatre.
Through experimentation, improvisation, and structured composition, students will explore storytelling through song, movement, and dramatic text, developing their ability to create and refine original material. The module will emphasise the integration of character development, narrative structure, and thematic exploration, fostering a deeper understanding of musical theatre as a collaborative art form.
Teaching and Learning
Students will be taught through practical sessions, seminars, workshops and master classes with top industry professionals. Teaching will be rigorous and push all students to be their best, whilst also remaining person centered and approachable. Learners will be taught by a core faculty, along with guest tutors all of whom have extensive industry knowledge and experience. The links with Hope Mill Theatre’s producing arm will allow students to gain experience on professional shows and leave with credits.
On average throughout the academic year students will have over 30 hours per week of structured face to face learning. As well as individual singing lessons in all years. Learners have access to regular tutorials and feedback sessions, as well as enrichment, well-being, body work and nutrition workshops.
Assessment and Feedback
HMTA employs a wide variety of assessment methods including formative, continuous and summative assessment.
Assessment evidence is collected through:
- Continuous and summative assessments in technique modules, creative and performance modules
- Assessed rehearsal processes
- Showings of performance, devised work, improvisation & performance research
- Lecture demonstrations
- Written essays and dissertations
- Written/verbal project reports and evaluations / reflections
- Individual and small group verbal presentations
Overall Workload
Your overall workload consists of class contact hours, directed study tasks, independent study, academic tutorials, enrichment classes and opportunities to see work at Hope Mill Theatre. Contact time averages around 30 hours per week, although this is module-dependent. During rehearsal and performance periods this will increase
In addition to structured learning activities, there is a clear expectation that you will engage in independent study of at least 1.5 hours per module per week

Undergraduate Course fees for 2026 entry
£9,790* per year – Home students ‘Home’ applies to nationals from the UK, Ireland and those who have EU Settlement Scheme status.‘

Student Finance
HMTA as a validated degree by Northern School of Contemporary Dance (NSCD). As you will be registered by NSCD and are entitled to the same financial assistance as students at UK Universities. This support includes government-sponsored loans and grants for information: Eligible Home fee-paying students are able to apply for a course fee loan to pay for fees and a maintenance loan to contribute towards living costs. LIVING AND ACCOMMODATION COSTS
Many students at HMTA supplement living expenses by undertaking part-time work. This is fairly easy to come by in Manchester, and some work for students is offered by the HMTA/HMT itself.
Hope Mill Theatre Arts does not have student accommodation connected to the school but we do facilitate a House Hunting Day and provide support and useful contacts for you to use when arranging your accommodation.
Application Fee Waivers
Application fee waivers are available for UK applicants from low-income households who may struggle to find the funds to pay for an audition. Please indicate on your application form that you wish to apply for a Application Fee Waiver and the team will be in touch. Support for Care Leavers & Estranged Students
Applicants who are in care, foster care or care leavers are eligible for an audition fee waiver and additional maintenance support. The same support is offered to those who are adopted or estranged from their parents. If this applies to you, make sure to state this in your application.Have a question?

HMTA is committed to helping our students to get the most out of their time with us. Our team of trained student guidance advisors are available to help and support our students.

Inclusivity
All HMTA course have been designed with inclusivity in mind. All modules offer alternative modes of assessment to ensure students can work to their own strengths. Tutors and visiting faculty members are available to discuss adaptions and assessment modes.
Learner Support
All students are assessed for dyslexia and dyspraxia to identify those who need additional support. Our Learner Support Coordinator is available to offer advice and assistance and supports students wishing to claim the Disabled Students’ Allowance
Well-Being
Each term, learners will have access to regular well-being group sessions as well as 1 to 1 support from trained staff members
Body Work Support
Students will take part in regular body works classes as well as fitness and nutrition underpinning the rest of the curriculum. We will offer support in finding a local GP and other services.

Dance is a dynamic, fast-moving sector and our courses evolve to ensure they reflect and respond to the industry’s needs.
Sometimes it may be necessary to change course content, delivery and entry requirements, if we believe it will enable us to improve the high-quality experience we offer. Changes sometimes comes because of student feedback/consultations, external examiner feedback and consultation with industry partners.
