TURN ON FEST: Becoming Electra: A Queer Mitzvah

“So I guess I don’t really fit in anywhere. I feel like I’m in a bit of a tangle.

It’s like when you leave all your necklaces in one jewellery box and then you try to get one out but they’re all knotted up together and if you pull one chain they just all bunch tighter and it becomes even more of a mess and so actually you can’t even wear any of them anymore and you probably just have to chuck them.”

It’s the night of Electra’s 18th birthday party. The guests are arriving. Mum’s downing glass after glass of champagne, Auntie Sydney’s brought matzo balls and Uncle David is kissing everyone. Figgy and Rox have rocked up from the protest with their ‘free the nipple’ placards and Rivkah’s just arrived with the girls from synagogue and leftover gefilte fish.

It’s going to be a disaster.

Tonight, Electra is going to have to channel her idol, Avril Lavigne, and find her voice as her two worlds collide.

Performed by critically-acclaimed drag queen, Guy Woolf (aka Electra Cute, one fifth of drag supergroup DENIM) Becoming Electra is a smash-hit musical-comedy-drama about a Queer Jewish girl figuring out who she is going to be.

This heart-wrenching, empowering and fiercely funny play with songs is utterly unmissable for anyone who ever felt like they might be a bit weird.

Are you coming to the party?
